Jiangran Zhao, a JI doctoral student of Prof. Kai Xu, has won the Best Student Paper Award at the 2013 IEEE/ASME International Conference on Advanced Intelligent Mechatronics held on July 9-12, 2013 in Wollongong, Australia.
The AIM conference is an offspring flagship conference of IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics (TMech) inaugurated in 1997. AIM2013 conference brought together an international community of experts to discuss the most advanced research results, perspectives of future developments, and innovative applications relevant to mechatronics, robotics, control, automation, and related areas.
The conference organizers received 439 papers submitted from 44 countries, among which 300 were accepted after peer review based on full-paper submissions. Accepted and presented papers are indexed by EI, Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index (ISI Proceedings) and SciVerse Scopus, and included in IEEE Xplore®.
Jiangran Zhao’s paper, titled "An Endoscopic Continuum Testbed for Finalizing System Characteristics of a Surgical Robot for NOTES Procedures"was first selected as one of the 6 finalists for the AIM2013 Best Student Paper Award. The paper presents the development of an endoscopic continuum testbed for finalizing system characteristics of a surgical robot for NOTES (Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery) procedures.
A conference session was dedicated to judging the presentations of all finalists. The award committee finally named Jiangran Zhao as the winner of the AIM2013 Best Student Paper. His paper was recognized as a piece of exceptionally high quality work by the committee. Jiangran Zhao might be the first student awardee from an institution in Mainland China.
