The University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) has captured the top trophy of the 2023 Tizong Cup Women’s Basketball Championship by collaborating with the SJTU School of Biomedical Engineering. The joint team fought through rounds of challenges and defeated the SJTU School of Medicine in the final to win the championship of the competition.
The Tizong Cup is a large-scale sports series open to all undergraduate and graduate students studying at SJTU campuses. A total of 22 teams from different schools of the university attended the two-month women’s basketball competition this year. The championship victory marks the first time for JI to claim the Tizong Cup title. The JI women’s basketball team also achieved honors such as the Freshmen Cup champions in 2015 and 2016, the fourth place and the third place of the Tizong Cup in 2017 and 2018 respectively, the runner-up of the Freshmen Cup in 2018 and the third place of SJTU Sports Games in 2022.
Speaking of the competition, JI Class of 2023 graduate student Yixing Fan who serves the role of Center in the team said: “I have been with the JI team for seven years since 2016. It has been a journey of ups and downs, from winning the Freshman Cup, reaching the top four in the Tizong Cup, to stopping at the quarterfinals. I am delighted to win this championship in my final year, together with the joint team from the School of Biomedical Engineering. It brings a perfect conclusion to my seven years of basketball journey on campus.”
