Yu Zhang, manager of the International Student Recruitment and Service Office at the University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter), has been awarded the First Prize of the 2024 SJTU Management Service Award, one of the highest honors of the university serving to recognize exemplary models in administrative work.

As a pioneer in international student admissions, Zhang played a key role in establishing SJTU’s English-language engineering platform for international students, enhancing both the quality and structure of admissions. The Joint Institute now enrolls over 100 international undergraduate students from 26 countries, including the United States, Canada, Germany, and Singapore. She also developed a comprehensive student service system covering orientation, daily management, and career development. Committed to promoting SJTU and China’s stories globally, she has helped international students become cultural ambassadors and build bridges for international exchange.

Yu Zhang, who holds a master’s degree from the University of Michigan, currently serves as the manager of the International Undergraduate Recruitment and Service Office at the Joint Institute. She has been recognized multiple times as an “Outstanding Individual in Undergraduate Admissions” at SJTU and has received annual excellence awards for her contributions to international student recruitment and cross-cultural exchange.
