The winner list of the sixth University Physics Competition has been announced. Two teams composed of University of Michigan- Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) sophomores stood out among the 150 teams from around the world and won the bronze medal.
The University Physics Competition (UPC) is an international contest for undergraduate students. The students work in teams of up to three members at their home universities. They spent 48 hours analyzing real-world physics scenarios with their knowledge in physics and writing up a formal solution paper.
This year, the competition organizer received a total of 150 papers from world famous universities. Among them, 77 teams, including JI’s two teams, selected Problem A: Terraforming Mars. JI’s team members include Shihao Feng, Yifan Jiang, Mingjie Gao; Yide Gu, Xiahan Li, Zihan Li. Their paper, which involves interdisciplinary knowledge from multiple areas of physics and shows excellent quantitative modeling techniques, won the bronze prize.
Since 2012, JI students have delivered outstanding performance in the annual competition. Supervised by JI’s physics lecturer Dr. Mateusz Krzyzosiak, students started preparing several months ahead. They met regularly to learn how to solve open-ended problems, manage the time efficiently and write perfect solution paper. Veteran students often drop in to give pointers.
