24 graduate students of the Univeristy of Michigan- SHanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute’s (UM-SJTU JI) Class of 2017 received their graduate degrees on March 22. The graduation ceremony took place at the Yu Liming Student Center, officiated by David Hung, Associate Dean for Graduate Education. The VIP was Mr. Ye Chen, Vice President of the Gabriel Group, Director and General Manager of Yanfeng Gabriel Security Systems Co., Ltd.
On behalf of JI faculty and staff, Dean Peisen Huang congratulated the graduates.He remarked that since the first batch of graduate students started in 2010, the level of JI’s graduate education has been increasingly recognized and has made significant impacts on the society. He expected the graduates to continue growing and make progress with JI’s graduate education.
In his commencement address, Mr. Ye Chen, a double alumnus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of Michigan, encouraged the graduates to reach their goals with passion and effort, persevere in the face of challenges and setbacks, keep on learning, be a good citizen, and create value and their own personal brand.
Professor Mian Li reminded the graduates to apply what they have learned, pursue their ideals, and remember SJTU’s motto of gratitude and responsibility.
Ming Liu, a graduate with a doctoral degree in control science and engineering, hoped that every graduate can uphold JI’s philosophy, become a model for future engineers, and lead China’s and even the world’s development.
On behalf of foreign students, Anton Van Beek from the Netherlands, a graduate with a master degree in mechanical engineering, talked about his reasons to be an engineer and his honor to be able to help solve people’s problems. He expressed his gratitude to JI professors for infusing him a sense of responsibility as an engineer.

This year, JI bestowed a total of 23 master degrees and one doctoral degree, including three international students. Among them, three will continue advanced study in other world-class universities. The others have successfully landed jobs in Huawei, Schlumberger, Kelei, Ford, Baidu, General Motors and other multinational companies in key industries at home and abroad.
