The seventh Freescale East-China Collegial Smart Car Competition was held on July 17 and 18. 756 students in 252 teams from 54 universities participated in the contest. JI’s sophomores Zheng Gong, Huei Lin, and freshman Yichen Zhao won the first and second prizes respectively.
Freescale Collegial Smart Car Competition is an innovative technological contest sponsored by the Ministry of Education to encourage university students to use creativity, apply knowledge, and work in teams. The competition is divided in 3 groups based on the way the model car senses the route, i.e., electromagneticgroup, optoelectronicgroup, and the camera group. After three turns, Team Cyber# of Zheng Gong and Yichen Zhao ranked number three, first prize, and Team SyderSXII of Huei Lin ranked number 17, second prize.
Yichen Zhao commented that he had experience in similar contests while in high school. Even so, he considered this competition quite a challenge to him because he and Zheng Gong are strong in electronics but short on mechanics. He is elated to get the first prize and felt their efforts were worthwhile.
Zheng Gong had started preparing for the competition since last winter break and had worked through the spring semester. He remarked, “Even though we are very busy in the summer semester, we managed to participate in the competition.”
Huei Lin commented, “I joined the contest because I wanted to learn something beyond my classes and practice what I had learned in classes.”
