Description:
This course explores history and identity as expressed in texts under a specific genre of ethnic literature. It explores the history of Chinese Americans and how those forces shape Chinese American identity across periods of time. It explores the history of Chinese Americans, either as expressed in-text or in literary context. It explores the complex, often conflicted ways texts express Chinese American identity, especially within a larger ??American?? mainstream. Topics include: sociological and anthropological definitions of ethnicity; the first, second, and third waves of immigration in Chinese American history; the Other in American literature; Chinese Americans as a ??third culture kids?? in American society. Assignments include: a personal reflection essay, a bibliography, one short (3-4p) analytical paper, a presentation, and one mid-length (5-7p) analytical paper.
