Description:

Global Multidisciplinary Design Project (GMDP)
UM College of Engineering (CoE) and UM-SJTU Joint Institute (JI)

To enhance the education of UM and JI students in unique ways, a Global Multidisciplinary Design Program (GMDP) is proposed. This would consist of a two-term to one year project with teams composed of both UM College of Engineering (CoE) students and JI students.

As a pilot test, it is proposed that up to 5 teams of students be initiated in the Fall 2016 semester at the JI, with 10 CoE students spending the Fall semester at the JI, paired with 15 JI students (teams of 2 CoE students with 3 JI students). A single corporate sponsor is suggested, from the US side, to facilitate the logistics of this initial offering. In the Fall 2016 term, the students would enroll in a course similar to ENGR 355:

ENGR 355. Intermediate Multidisciplinary Engineering Project
Prerequisite: permission of instructor (1 to 4 credits)?
Intermediate course in which students acquire, develop, and refine skills for success in the modern engineering design process using mentored, multidisciplinary, team-based, project work. Students will integrate: (1) knowledge from previous courses; (2) knowledge of engineering design process; and (3) professional skills (e.g., teamwork, project planning, communications, etc.).

The students, as a group, would begin the exploration of their teaming and scoping of their design project.

In the Winter 2017 semester, the CoE students would return to the Ann Arbor campus and continue working on the MDP project. The JI students would continue working on the MDP project in China and would regularly, remotely connect with the CoE students and CoE project advisor. In the last month of the Winter semester, the JI students would have the opportunity to come to UM for the month and team directly with the CoE students towards the culminating Design Expo at the end of the term.

An option is for the JI students to continue the GMDP project through a third design cycle in the Summer 2017 term, with a potential that this term applies towards their capstone design experience requirement at the JI.

For the 2016-17 pilot, Greg Hulbert and Gail Hohner will facilitate the GMDP on the CoE side. It is anticipated that one or both will be at the JI in the Fall 2016 term to kick-off and/or visit the team in person.
