With its revitalization, China has again drawn the attention of the world: What is China, and what does it mean to be Chinese? Through reflection on questions such as these, students will be introduced to the field of China studies. The course will explore different ways China has been studied both in China and abroad. By the end of the course students should be familiar not only with the major topics in the field of China studies, but also the different perspectives scholars from different background look at China.

2. Marxism and the studies of China in the twentieth- century
3. China studies in the cold war era
4. Post colonialism and the re-thinking of China
5. China studies in Contemporary China
