Description:

Designed for the winter program, this course will bring students to a place that is closely related to certain theme(s) in Chinese history. While students will read both primary and secondary literature and complete regular course work, this course focuses on field study. Students are expected to raise questions from the readings and bring these questions to explore different aspects of the historical site. The goal of this course is to extend and deepen students’ understanding of China through experiential learning.

1. Literary tradition and everyday aesthetics
2. Lineage and the governance of rural society
3. The interaction between ecological system and cultural system
4. Rural society in Chinese history
