This seminar course is designed to present an overview and discuss major topics of regional diplomacy of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
Beginning with a brief introduction of a historical review of China’s role in the region. The main body of the course is divided into the following sections:
(1) the development of Chinese regional diplomacy after the founding of the PRC,
(2) China’s foreign policy toward different types of neighbours
(3) domestic determinants and its impact on regional diplomacy,
(4) current issues future of China’s regional policy and its implications on China’s role in the world.

1. China in the region: Historical and Geographical Legacies
2. Rational models (National Security; Territorial Concerns; Political Economy)
3. Norms, Identities, and National Interests
4. China’s foreign policy decision–making process
5. Bilateral relationship between China regional players (including Northeast Asia, ASEAN, Japan, Russia and so on)
6. Soft Power and Non-governmental diplomacy
7. World affairs, regional politics and China’s role
