POL3610J – Chinese Diplomacy and Foreign Policy Making

This seminar course is designed to present an overview and discuss on major topics of the foreign policy of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
Begining with a brief introduction of a historical review of China’s role of the pre-modern world. The main body of the course is devided into four sections:
(1) the development of Chinese foreign policy after the founding of the PRC,
(2) China’s foreign policy toward different kinds of countries or on different issues,
(3) domestic determinants and foreign policy decision-making in China,
(4) current issues in and future of China’s foreign policy.

2. Rational models (National Security; Territorial Concerns; Political Economy)
3. Norms, Identities, and National Interests
4. China’s foreign policy decision–making process
5. Bilateral relationship between China other players (including Northeast Asia, ASEAN, Africa, Europe and the U.S.)
6. Soft Power and Non-governmental diplomacy
7. China’s Rise and World Order
