Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is an emerging field of study to develop embedded Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) system. By implementing active sensors, real-time damage detection and health monitoring of the host-structure can be achieved. It possesses great potential for future industrial applications to enhance the structural reliability, reduce maintenance cost, and shorten downtime.
JI mini-workshop series: “systematic approach for foot and ankle injuries”
JI miniworkshop series was kicked off in October 2016, in a bid to promote scientific research exchange and collaboration among JI faculty members and researchers. The recently-held workshop chaired by Professor Shane Johnson was the first such event held at the newly-built Long Bin Building.

Entrepreneurship Week 2018 was successfully held at Long Bin Building of University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) from September 4 to September 7. Multiple JI research projects secure 2018 NSFC funding
The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) announced the 2018 list of funded projects recently. Four projects of the University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) were on the list, including two Young Scientist Projects and two General Projects.

Symposium on smart connected systems held at JI
On May 24th, the Preparation Meeting and Symposium for the UM-SJTU Joint Research Center for Smart Connected Systems was held at JI Long Bin Building. Senior representatives from leading companies including CIMC, Freetech, Bosch, DFJ Dragon Fund China, GE Healthcare (China) Group, JMCG, Panasonic, and renowned scholars from the University of Michigan and Shanghai Jiao Tong University attended the meeting. The symposium was officiated by JI Professor Xudong Wang.
