About UM-SJTU JI

The University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (JI) was jointly established in 2006 by two premier universities, the University of Michigan and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, creating a Sino-US academic partnership with tremendous potential. The mission of JI is to build a world-class educational and research institute in China and foster future innovative researchers and leaders with a global perspective.

Guided by the philosophy of “Internationalization, Interdisciplinary, Innovation, and Quality”, JI has developed a unique educational model through combining American and Chinese educational philosophies and principles. JI has won many awards for higher education innovation, including the “Model of Chinese Higher Education Reform” from the Chinese State Council and the “Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in Higher Education” from the Institute of International Education, one of the most prestigious awards in international education.

At present, JI offers three majors to undergraduate students and eight research disciplines to graduate students. The dual-Bachelor’s-degree program with the University of Michigan allows students to earn two Bachelor’s degrees in two different majors within four years. JI has also partnered with 30 top universities and institutes worldwide to offer students a variety of Global Degree Pathways (GDP) programs and international exchange opportunities, to encourage them to diversify their learning experience in preparation for an increasingly complex world.

JI receives strong support from both partner universities and the Chinese government. JI models itself after the world class U.S. research universities, in terms of its tenure review and promotion system, academic environment, research program, and undergraduate curriculum. Its official language is English.

JI Faculty

JI’s faculty come from prestigious universities all over the world, with advanced degrees in subfields of engineering, mathematics, sciences, liberal arts, and business. Currently, JI has 63 full-time faculty members, 100% of our engineering and science faculty hold doctoral degrees from top universities and have overseas working experience.

JI Research

The international academic environment of JI allows faculty, visiting scholars, and students to keep up with the frontiers of technology. Currently, JI has 3 research centers and more than 30 research laboratories. JI’s research projects are funded by Chinese national and municipal governments, local industries, and foreign entities.

JI Students

JI students are among the best in China. Currently, JI has 1179 undergraduate and 316 graduate students. JI has attracted degree-pursuing international students from over 30 countries. Upon completion of undergraduate programs, over 85% of students pursue graduate study at top universities worldwide. 100% of those who choose to enter the job market are employed by leading domestic and international universities, research institutes and companies.
