Abstract
It is crucial to accurately master the mechanical properties of thin polymer films from nanoscale to microscale. However, there are still conflicting results and significant lacks of research on mechanical properties in specific scenarios. In this dissertation, the author has conducted three investigations to examine the mechanical properties of thin polymer films, both under nanoconfinement and at bulk state. Specially, using the self-built bulging test system, the mechanical properties of freely standing thin PS films were investigated during creep process, relaxation process, and under the polymer-polymer interfacial effect, which were often overlooked or insufficiently studied in previous research. These works broaden the understanding of films under nanoconfinement and promote the utilization of thin films in nanodevices.
Biography
Yuhan Xiao received the B.S. degrees in material science and engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2019. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at the UM-SJTU Joint Institute, supervised by Prof. Yunlong Guo. His current research focuses on mechanical properties of thin polymer films, especially films with nanoscale thickness.
