To actively participate in Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s (SJTU) undergraduate recruitment campaign and to showcase JI’s excellence in research and teaching, the University of Michigan- SJTU Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) provided a Popular Science Lecture Series for key high schools across China during the last two months in 2015. Braving the wintry cold, the faculty members, including Peisen Huang, Qianbin Chen, Horst Hohberger, Mian Li, Chengbin Ma, Songliang Chen, Rockwell Clancy, Yongxing Shen, Shane Johnson, David Hung, Yonglong Guo, Andrew Yang, traveled far and delivered lectures in 25 high schools, including the Beijing Fourth, Tsinghua-affiliated High School, Shanghai High School, SJTU-affiliated High School, Guangzhou Accor High School, etc., enriching the local schools with interesting lectures of popular science, having reached nearly ten thousand youngsters who responded enthusiastically.

As the smallest institute that delivered the most number of lectures in SJTU, JI’s popular science lecture series covered more than a dozen scientific fields to promote high school students’ understanding of the technological frontiers offered by the JI and to inspire their interests in the disciplines. JI has provided an important social service of improving the scientific literacy of China’s young people.
