JI is hosting its third annual graduate students recruiting summer camp in early July (the actual date is stated in the invitation letter). It aims to build an interaction platform for outstanding undergraduates from all over China to learn about the Joint Institute. Another important purpose is to recruit master and Ph.D. students for 2013. Interested students are encouraged to apply. Those with good academic performance will be recommended for pre-admission to the JI graduate programs without taking the entrance examination or they can enjoy the priority to admission in taking the exams. JI will provide participants’ room and board in Shanghai and transportation (second-class train tickets) for out-of-town students.

Introduction of UM-SJTU JI

University of Michigan (Ann Arbor)-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) was established in 2006 based on the successful international cooperation between the two universities. Its goal is to build a world-class research university and cultivate global innovative leaders.

Over the past six years, JI has established a curriculum and evaluation system comparable to those of University of Michigan. All classes are conducted in English. Students receive top-tier US education without going abroad. All faculty members hold Ph. D. degrees from elite universities from around the world. All tenured professors are recognized by Chinese government’s 1000 Scholars Program. JI has become a testing ground for China’s higher education reform.

Since 2009, the JI has started recruiting full-time master and Ph. D. students in various engineering programs including Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering.  In 2011, the first batch of international students was admitted. JI emphasizes international exchange and collaboration. Students as well as faculty are encouraged to publish papers in first-class international journals.

Covidian Presidential Scholarship

In addition to the monthly stipend of 1500 RMB (master students) or 2500 RMB (Ph.D students), to encourage academic excellence,  JI will award 30 Covidian Presidential Scholarships starting in the 2012 Summer Camp. The scholarship is 18,000 RMB a year, with the possibility of extending to 2 years contingent on the graduate student’s performance.
