On June 1st, the JI International Program Office sponsored a Chinese Cooking Night for 30 students from University of Michigan and University of Maryland at Hello Restaurant in the Minhang Campus.
The activity kicked off at 7 p.m. The first item on the menu is Jiaozi, the Chinese dumplings. Following the demonstration of some JI students, the American students learned how to make the popular Chinese treat. Using their imagination, the students had fun creating different shapes of dumplings besides the traditional ingot shape.
The second appetizer is Spring Rolls. Students learned how to wrap the prepared fillings of cabbage and pork or red bean paste in thin wrappers and then deep fried the rolls in hot oil.
The main dish is the famous Gongbao chicken. The students stir fried diced marinated chicken, green peppers, red chili peppers, and peanuts in a wok.
For traditional Chinese dessert, students rolled glutinous rice balls which were then boiled in pre-fermented glutinous rice soup.
The American students enjoyed a great feast of the fruits of their labor. The Chinese Cooking Night provided the visiting students with a rare window to the Chinese culture by learning to cook some traditional Chinese foods.
