Since 2012, Prof. Dugnani is an associate researcher and lecturer at the University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute in Shanghai. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Dugnani held a position at Exponent Failure Analysis Associates, a leading international scientific and engineering consulting firm. During his employment with Exponent, Dr. Dugnani specialized in failure analysis, fracture mechanics, material degradation, corrosion, fatigue, life prediction, and design of both medical devices and electronic devices. Between 2009 and 2012 Dr. Dugnani held an Adjunct Faculty position at Santa Clara University, CA in the Civil as well as in the Mechanical Engineering Department. In 2003 Dr. Dugnani contributed to the development of the manufacturing process for novel miniaturized piezoelectric sensors at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Tsukuba, Japan.
Research Interests
1) Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of composite structures; Damage detection and image reconstruction schemes based on surface waves generated by an array of PZT sensors; Modeling of PZT sensors/actuators mounted on structures including the adhesive film.
2) Acoustics imaging; Design and manufacturing of low-impedance, piezoelectric sensor-actuators for use in biological application; Discontinuities detection and image reconstruction for soft tissue applications.
3) Fractography of brittle material; Fracture mechanics of brittle solids such as single crystal silicon, glass, and glass-ceramics.
4) MEMS Devices for acoustic imaging
