The Chinese Government has just announced the new group of winners for the “Youth 1000-People Plan.” JI’s Associate Professor Yaping Dan is our third faculty member to receive the honor. Professors Benjamin Yellen and Wenjie Wan were previously honored.
Prof. Dan obtained his Ph.D. from University of Pennsylvania. Before joining JI in May 2012 he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Associate at Harvard University. He won the Postdoctoral Fellowship Award from the US National Academies in 2009. His research interests are in nanowire-based single electron/single dopant transistors and nanowire-based single photon electronics and high speed ultrasensitive photodetectors.
Prof. Dan is very honored to receive the Youth 1000-People award. He remarked, “I think it is recognition of what I have achieved in science. It will be very helpful for me to develop my career in Chinese academia.” He thinks his work on graphene sensors, which has been cited over 120 times in the past 3 years, contributes significantly to his winning the award. He commented, “In this work, I discovered the true sensing mechanism of graphene vapor sensors, which was wrongly believed by the pioneers in this field.”
His presentation during the 1000-People evaluation was so impressive that a representative from another university approached him to discuss the possibility of joining their faculty. Prof. Dan observed, “Generally Chinese universities are very aggressive to attract oversea talents these days. This is good news for those who want to develop their career in China.”
With the new funding, Prof. Dan plans to develop nanowire-based quantum devices and investigate graphene-like 2D semiconductors.
