After two months of stringent review and selection, the SJTU Excellent Teaching Committee announced the winner list on July 13, 2012. JI Associate Professor David Hung wins the “First Prize of 2012 SJTU Outstanding Teaching Award” and English Lecturer Masako Iwamoto wins the “Second Prize of 2012 SJTU Zhuguang (Candle Light) Teaching Award.”
The following are the winners’ remarks:
David Hung
“The teacher is a noble profession; teaching is an elegant art; educating people is a superb responsibility.”
“Based on my long-time experience in studying, teaching, and working overseas, I have made gradual reforms to cultivate the teaching models in our classrooms. Considering Chinese students’ educational background and strength, I have introduced quality teaching resources and education methods from the American system. By focusing on stimulating the students’ interest and passion for engineering, teamwork, experimental hands-on capabilities, work ethics and responsibility, I gradually guide them into the fields of engineering. ”
Masako Iwamoto
“My hope/goal—To foster individuals who will not only be able to contribute to China and to the world but also will dedicate themselves forthe sake of others.”
“I believe close interaction with students and striving to be a role model as an individual person are prerequisites for the students to feel that the instructor cares about their growth and to establish trust. I strongly believe education must be for each individual student, not for the ‘mass,’ and regardless of the class size, I strive to bring care and trust into the classroom.”
