2014 JI New Student Convocation was held at Ruiqiou Chen auditorium on September 14. Dean Peisen Huang, Xinwan Li, Party Secretary and Associate Dean for Research, Gang Zheng, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education, some faculty and staff, all freshmen and graduate students of Class 2014, as well as parents, were present. The entire ceremony was conducted in English, showing JI’s international characteristics.
Prof. Peisen Huang, JI’s new Dean, first welcomed and congratulated the new students and their parents. Then he gave detailed introduction of JI. He pointed out JI faculty are excellent in both teaching and research, with many leading in their frontier research fields; JI’s educational ideas and achievements have won national as well as international recognition over the past 8 years; JI’s all-English teaching, various international programs, and integration with UM curriculum provide a competitive edge for JI’s development. He summarized JI’s strong suits into I2Q,i.e., Innovation, Internationalization, and Quality. “We have the best faculty, the most efficient staff, and the most diligent students, with which we can rival any other university,” boasted Huang confidently. At last, he exhorted the students to take full advantage of the rich resources of JI to expand their horizons, make good friends, and set sails for the bright future.
Representing the current students, Peng Yuan, President of JI Students’Union, delivered the convocation address titled “No Struggle, No Progress.” He said, “What distinguishes JI from the others is that everybody at JI is working hard constantly. You newbies will make an impact here and change the world in 10-20 years. Since we receive the best education, we have to assume the responsibility. Your stories begin today and your dreams are unfolding now!”
Zhijian Hao spoke on behalf of all freshmen. “What JI attracts me is her high-caliber faculty, advanced education ideas, and international education environment. JI provides us with the best so we have no doubt about our dreams.” On behalf of all freshmen, he thanked all parents and reassured them that students would take care of themselves, work hard, improve, and contribute to the humanity. He urged all new students to work hard and realize their dreams together, starting today as JI family members.
Lars Vaagnes from Norway spoke as the representative of new international students. “JI’s internationalization is why I come to JI. The uncertainties and great potentials in the next 4 years are what draw me,” he said. “I am honored to be at JI. I have been anticipating this day for a long time, because I can’t wait to meet my classmates, become part of JI family, and learn about Chinese culture.”
Representing all 60 new graduate students from all over the world, Yusheng Wang expressed his admiration and high expectation of JI’s frontier research fields, first-class faculty, and international educational environment. He encouraged all students to take advantage of JI’s rich resources, develop their potentials, and contribute to the society.
The new student convocation ceremony concluded successfully, with the showing of video clips of the previous day’s registration and moving-in, parents congratulating, and the students smiling broadly and looking forward to the new life at JI.
