The SJTU tryout for the 2014 International U21(Universitas 21)Three-minute Thesis Competition was held in the Minhang campus on September 25. A judge panel composed of Vice President Huang Zheng and Deans of several graduate schools has selected the winners who will represent SJTU to attend the U21 3MT Final.
The 3-Minute Thesis Competition was initiated by the University of Queensland and quickly swept through Australia and New Zealand, which has just gone global through the Universitas 21 network. It is an academic competition which challenges doctoral candidates to communicate the significance of their projects to an amateur audience in just three minutes.
The SJTU tryout was sponsored by the SJTU Graduate School and the Party, with aim to develop students’ communication skills through competition and to select the SJTU contestants for the U21 3MT Final. The 17 candidates from 9 schools delivered a wide variety of topics, including mechanical design, computation research, agricultural development, life medicine, new energy, etc. Jing Long, a JI Ph.D. student from Prof. Tian Yang’s Nanophotonics Laboratory, won the second prize by her excellent presentation of “Detecting a single molecule within a gold nanoparticle-plane junction.”
Jing Long will undergo further coaching and tryout as a SJTU contestant to compete with Ph.D. students from around the world in the upcoming virtual 3MT Final via live video.
