A yummy “Gourmet Night Market” kicked off at the end of the University of Michigan- Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute’s (UM-SJTU JI) annual Cultural Festival on the evening of April 26. Rows of hawker food stalls were set up at the stage in front of Dorm 21, manned by JI freshmen and sophomores who transformed into gourmet chefs and showed off their culinary skills. The aroma enticed President Zhang Jie to grab a bite at the stalls.
Who can imagine that JI students who are noted for academic excellence also possess a knack for gourmet cooking, having effortlessly whipped up various mouthwatering snacks including durian pudding, homemade Oden, cold noodle, bubble tea, fried tofu, cotton candy, chocolate fountain, sandwiches and fruit salad. Students were divided by classes and worked in teams seamlessly. The delectable spread attracted throngs of customers.

The VIP of the festival was President Zhang Jie, who joked that he was lured by the whiffs of delicious food while working in his office at the Administrative Building. That night happened to be the birthday of freshman Gaole Meng and sophomore Yuecheng Liu, so an impromptu birthday party was thrown to wish them happy birthday. The event was heartwarming as well as stomach filling.

Camaraderie at the Night Market
The Gourmet Night Market is the first of its kind organized by the JI Living Quarter Club, which provides an excellent opportunity for students to hone hands-on skills through a savory experience. The delightful event concluded the 2015 JI Spring Cultural Festival with great success. JI students have been energized during the colorful and enjoyable activities and are ready to embark on the next stage of their study.
