The new students of the University of Michigan- Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) arrived at the SJTU Minhang Campus on the morning of September 12. A volunteer team of JI students in eye-catching T-shirts were ready bright and early, waving JI’s giant flag and helping the new students settle into the JI family.
Thorough Preparations
To ensure every new student’s smooth move-in, JI staff and the dormitory personnel had inspected every room for cleanness and safety over the past week.
Gift Packets chock-full of orientation materials
Each new student received a gift packet filled with orientation materials, including “JI Survival Guide” and “Kicking off at JI,” both compiled by current JI students to inform about JI’s curriculum, study-abroad programs, student clubs, time management techniques and career planning guides. The rich resources from precious firsthand experiences were passed down to the newbies so they can get a head start without struggling with trials and errors.

Passing of Energies
The gift packet contained two wrist bands of JI’s signature blue and yellow colors. The yellow symbolizes youthful energy and the blue positive energy. The students wear them to start their new life at JI.
SJTU President Zhang Jie and University Councilman Jian Sixian paid a visit to the Meet and Greet at the gym, thanking the staff and volunteers for their hard work.
Blue Tiger, the JI mascot
At 7 in the morning, two Blue Tigers, JI’s mascots, were ready to welcome the new comers. They attracted a big crowd, especially the children. The Blue Tigers symbolize JI’s pursuit of Internationalization, Innovation and Quality.

Free transport service
At 6:30 in the morning, a fleet of “JI Compassion Tricycles” were already cris-crossing among Dormitories 20, 21, and 22, busy transporting the new students, parents and their belongings.
It started raining at 10 in the morning, but the rain did not dampen the helping spirit of the JI welcome team. The students set up tents and provided umbrellas for new students and parents.
