The University of Michigan- Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) is expected to add a new discipline, Integrative Systems + Design (ISD), to its Sequential Undergraduate/Graduate Study Program (SUGS) with the University of Michigan. On May 27, UM Professor Albert Shih introduced ISD to the JI community at the Yu Liming Student Center.
Integrative Systems + Design (ISD) aims to educate leaders who can think transformatively and create lasting value in the workplace and society. Courses and programs are delivered on Michigan’s campus, online, at work locations around the world or in a combination of delivery modes.
Professor Shih described the broad array of interdisciplinary technical graduate degrees: full-time study program includes design science, systems engineering design and manufacturing engineering design, manufacturing engineering and business administration; online learning program includes automotive engineering, energy systems engineering, global automotive and manufacturing engineering, etc. JI applicants for the SUGS in ISD may be admitted by the end of their junior year.
JI alumnus Yilong Wen (Class of 2010), General Manager of Uber China, Jiangsu, Anhui and Henan Branch, shared his meaningful experiences from studying ISD. He said ISD not only provides engineering expertise but also allows students to gain insight into fields of industry and grasp the situations of the industry ahead of time. In addition, ISD brings together people from different educational backgrounds and various work experiences. It stimulates students to think from a new perspective. Also ISD’s open teaching style helps encourage students to solve practical problems in an innovative way.
As a division of the University based in the College of Engineering, ISD is an interdisciplinary study incorporating engineering, art, design, business, humanities and medicine. Adding ISD to the current engineering offerings, JI’s SUGS will make a breakthrough from “ Engineering + Engineering” and provide students with a richer interdisciplinary SUGS program.
