The Ninth “Liming Cup” Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) Freshman Mechanical Innovation Competition was held on April 13, 2017. The University of Michigan- SJTU Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) teams successfully defended their championship after last year’s triumph.
The theme of this year’s competition was to simulate how quickly and accurately a crane can move and stack containers of different shapes and sizes. With the rapid development of manufacturing and transportation technology, the efficient transport and stacking has become crucial for business competition.

After fierce competitions, two JI teams emerged as the champion and the first runner-up. Two teams from the School of Mechanical Engineering won the third and fourth prizes.
The SJTU Freshman Mechanical Innovation Competition is jointly organized by JI and the School of Mechanical and Power Engineering, open to all freshmen of both schools, the School of Civil and Naval Engineering, the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Paris Institute of Technology. The event aims to inspire students’ innovative thinking, develop their ability to analyze practical problems and promote teamwork. Over the years, the technological competition has become increasingly popular and received wild acclaim for its various formats and rich contents.
