Professor Gang Zheng, associate dean for undergraduate education of the University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter), has been awarded the First Prize of the SJTU Teaching and Educating Award in 2024, a highest honor given by the university recognizing outstanding contributions in student education and development.

Gang Zheng earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in 2005. After graduation, he held positions as a tenure-track Assistant Professor, Director of the Embedded Systems Laboratory, and Head of the Computer Engineering Program at a U.S. university, as well as serving as a technical consultant for General Electric. In 2009, he was invited to join JI, where he has since served as the Head of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Program, Assistant Dean, and currently, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education.

Professor Zheng has been awarded the National Teaching Achievement Award (First Prize), the Shanghai Municipal Teaching Achievement Award (Top Prize), the Shanghai Municipal Teaching Achievement Award (First Prize, as Principal), and the SJTU Candlelight Award. He teaches courses such as “Introduction to Logic Design,” “Introduction to Computer Organization,” “Microprocessor-Based System Design,” and “Introduction to Computing.”
