Regardless of the route you will pursue, I believe you will walk far and succeed, because JI has prepared you well.” This was Dean Ni’s last commencement as JI’s founding Dean before stepping down. He encouraged the graduates to keep in touch and make great contributions to SJTU, China, and the world. Dean Ni received loud applauses for his tireless dedication to JI since her establishment in 2006 and preparation work back to 2000.
Prof. J. Brian Fowlkes spoke as the UM representative: “Class of 2010: This is a moment to be proud of yourselves. You have inherited the great tradition of the UM and SJTU; you will be the innovative global leaders of our future. Carry over the past excellence and serve the next generations. Graduation is only the beginning to explore the wide world. Strive forward!”
Dr. Xiaoya Liu, CEO of Yashi Long (ASL) Automobile Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.delivered a memorable commencement speech: “How to Become a Useful Person.” She shared her tips for graduates to succeed in 3, 5, 10, or longer years after graduation. She reminded students that any Chinese with the above traits can succeed.
Tongquan Ding, the valedictorian who is going to be a teaching volunteer in Inner Mongolia next year, thanked JI faculty and staff and their parents. He summarized the four years of JI experience into three key words: capabilities, friendship, and dreams. He said, “JI has taught us how to think like engineers and infused into us the power to change the world; we will treasure the friendship we have made at JI; choosing SJTU is choosing responsibilities. Today, we are going out of JI with responsibilities and dreams. Whichever way each of us chooses, we will meet in a better world in the future.”
Ms. Xufang He, the parent representative of the graduates (mother of Yihe Huang), expressed the joy for their children and gratitude to JI. “Four years ago, our children started their exciting journeys at JI, which we parents have the privilege to walk along. Over the four years, as ‘Mi-moms,’we are happy when our children are happy and fully enjoy the parenthood. The JI-parent experience has enriched our lives, made us feel young, and widen our horizons. We are grateful to JI, our children, and other parents.” “Graduation is not an ending. The answer sheet of life needs to be explored and filled. We wish best luck to every child and every parent. Tomorrow will be better!”
For the gift to JI, Class 2010 presented a special painting covered with every student’s handprints, symbolizing that their hearts are unified and connected with JI.
Finally, witnessed by parents and teachers, every student received his/her hard earned SJTU diploma and JI learning certificate from JI leaders and graduated officially.
