The 2015 U21 Student Summit was held at National University of Singapore from February 26 to 28, attended by 30 young people from China, USA, United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. The theme of this year’s summit was “Worldwide problems faced by contemporary youth leaders” around which the student delegates engaged in lively discussions and worked together to complete the final reports at the Assembly. JI student Peng Yuan and Ci Mo of Antai College of Economics & Management were SJTU’s representatives.

During the summit, Peng Yuan briefed the Assembly on how JI students achieved the reforms by infusing the characteristics of Chinese culture into an international education environment. He also shared JI’s experiences in student organizations and officer election campaigns. He remarked: “This summit allowed me to see how other countries’ student bodies tackle their responsibilities and challenges in school and community, which deepens my understanding of students work. At the same time, communicating with them has inspired me and boosted my enthusiasm. We share our youth passion and dreams.” Thanks to the hard work of Yuan Peng and Ci Mo, SJTU was elected as one of the 5 members of the U21 Student Summit Executive Committee.

Peng Yuan is an ECE junior at JI. In addition to being outstanding in academics, he has also been committed to cross-cultural communication skills and leadership development. He has won two national scholarships and SJTU’s first Fan Xuji scholarship. He is currently the ninth President of JI’s Students’ Union and Director of JI’s Class Advising Center. He is a member of JI’s Future Industrial Leadership Club and he joined the 8th Yunnan Volunteer Teacher Group. Peng Yuan’s mentor, Honorary Dean Jun Ni, praised him for his “high degree of consciousness, excellent leadership, strong sense of social responsibility, humility, and studiousness.”

U21 Student Summit is a regular activity organized by Universitas 21. Established in 1997 in Melbourne, Australia, Universitas 21 was originally composed of 17 member universities from 10 different countries and regions. It is an international university organization consisting of world-class research universities, with the goal of improving the education, research, and academic standards of these universities, strengthening international communication ability of member universities, and establishing common international standards and international consensus among the member universities. Beginning in 2014, members of the U21 would send student representatives to attend the annual U21 Student Summit, an occasion for student leaders from around the world to gather and discuss the direction of U21 student leader organization’s development and the challenges the student leaders in different cultures would face.
