A meeting to connect the University of Michigan- Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) Alumni Entrepreneurship Club with Shanghai alumni of the UM Ross School of Business was held at SJTU Xuhui Campus on January 16, 2016. More than seventy alumni, students and guests from various professions attended the meeting to exchange ideas about entrepreneurship and investment.

The gathering kicked off with an enthusiastic opening remarks by Yingnan Chen, an alumna of UM Ross. Then, Chong Wang, a JI alumnus (2012) and JI counselor, welcomed alumni and friends of both schools. He gave an overview of JI’s development and achievements in the past ten years, especially in 2015 when a great deal of alumni-related work was accomplished, including the establishment of JI Alumni Entrepreneurship Club, Industrial Big Data Club and Alumni Counseling Club. Alumni have also paid back by donating funds and collaborating with JI’s summer Design Expo.
On behalf of JI, Chong Wang expressed deep gratitude to all who care about JI and invite them to attend JI’s tenth-anniversary celebration on April 10 as well as SJTU’s 120th anniversary on April 8.

Zhongqiang Li, a SJTU alumnus and a partner of DFJ DragonFund China, gave a talk on the great opportunities in the emerging markets. Mr. Li is a seasoned venture capitalist with more than ten years of experience with SJTU Asset Group, Sino-Century and DFJ DragonFund China. He has a successful track record of venture investing. Starting with the history of China’s stock markets, he analyzed the current development and future opportunities of the venture investment.

During the session of “Dialogues on investment and entrepreneurship,” monitored by Dr. Kefeng Zhao, Associate Professor at Shanghai Finance University and a UM alumnus, prominent guests and young entrepreneurial alumni discussed the issues on investment and entrepreneurship. They exchanged ideas about management, development goals and decisions making in investment and entrepreneurship.

Then, it was free time for alumni, guests and students to exchange ideas and share experience, including suggestions on alumni activities for 2016 and future development.

This innovative and enriching JI-UM alumni meeting was a success in bonding entrepreneurial alumni and sparking new ideas, which, hopefully, will help advance alumni’s careers in the future.
