The University of Michigan- Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) and Roboterra, a Silicon-Valley-based robotics education company, co-sponsored a robotic competition for high school students at JI on July 13, attracting five teams from JI’s summer camp for international high school students, Roboterra’s Shanghai Learning Center and Donghua High School. The judges included Xinwan Li, JI Associate Dean for Research, Yang Wang, Manager of JI Undergraduate Recruitment, Pradeep Ray, Director of JI Entrepreneurship Center, and Shaolong Sui, a JI alumnus and a Roboterra co-founder.

The competition consists of five-minute presentations, robotic exhibitions and robotic races. By learning from the Roboterra education kit, students presented their creative ideas, mechanic theories, challenges and solutions. Each team showed how its robot ran on a track. Then, paired races finally decided the fastest robot.

“I’m amazed that these ninth-graders and high school freshmen can be so creative and capable of applying their ideas and successfully building their robots. I believe it is partly due to the hard work of the Roboterra instructors,” exclaimed Yang Wang.
