Li’s speech received enthusiastic responses. “JI’s educational philosophy and talent training model are impressive,” said an admissions officer from the University of Hong Kong. A number of representatives of mainland universities and high schools agreed that JI’s successful experience could serve as a model and they would continue to strengthen ties with SJTU in the future.

JI was founded in 2006 as the result of a strategic partnership between the University of Michigan and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The goal of this partnership is to build a world-class institute in China for nurturing future leaders with global visions. As a model of international education collaboration, JI has been highly recognized at home and abroad. After more than a decade, JI has developed a unique model of talent training by combining the best features of UM and SJTU. Two majors have achieved ABET accreditation; high-quality English teaching and world-class faculty create a superior learning environment. Besides building students’ solid foundation in engineering, JI develops their problem-solving capabilities as well as soft skills, such as creativity, teamwork, communication and leadership.
