On September 20, a delegation led by Steven Ceccio, Associate Dean for Research at the University of Michigan (UM), and Christine Muchanic, Director of International Relations, visited the UM-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI). The two sides held in-depth discussions on international exchange and research collaboration.

Led by Dean Peisen Huang, many JI leaders and faculty members attended the meeting. The two parties focused on the research collaboration on the smart connected system, smart energy system and other topics. They had detailed discussions on future research directions, funding sources, organizational formats and participants.

Dean Huang pointed out that the Joint Institute and the University of Michigan have a deep connection and a very close relationship, making it easy to form a productive international cooperation. The two sides should strengthen collaboration on scientific research, student exchange, teacher training, postdoctoral exchange and other aspects.

Xinwan Li, Associate Dean for Research, briefed on JI’s research development. Professors Xudong Wang and Shouhang Bo presented their research directions and current status. Li said that the UM delegates’ visit was timely on the occasion when SJTU and JI are revising further cooperation agreements with UM and was significant for building JI’s research and talent team. He also mentioned JI’s internationalization, top-notch faculty and multidisciplinary research would help promote future research collaboration.

After listening to the JI members, Steven Ceccio said that JI’s achievements in scientific research are impressive and that the University of Michigan has a strong interest in building an international joint research and development center. The two sides will strengthen the link on this basis.

Prior to the visit to JI, Steven Ceccio had met with Lifeng Xi, Vice President of Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Weidong Li, Associate Dean for Research of SJTU, having in-depth exchanges of research cooperation between the two universities and JI’s future research development. In the afternoon, Steven Ceccio discussed with five JI faculty members on energy materials. Then, he participated in a regular faculty meeting and shared insights about JI’s research and development strategies and career development with tenured faculty members.
