University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) renews Peisen Huang as its Dean in a renewal ceremony held on January 8 at the conference room of the institute. The reappointment decision was made effective from November 21, 2017, as announced by JI party secretary Xinwan Li on behalf of the Organization Department of SJTU. SJTU Vice President Xuemin Xu attended the ceremony and delivered a speech.
In his speech, Peisen Huang said being the JI Dean is a great honor as well as a big challenge. He expressed his gratitude on the continuous support from faculty, staff, students and their parents of JI and the university. Huang said great efforts to build up academic disciplines and expand the team of faculty will continue during his new term of office. He hopes JI will be built into a world-class institute for fostering leaders with a global perspective abiding by the education philosophy of “Internationalization, interdisciplinary, innovation and quality”.
Xinwan Li thanked the university for the dean renewal arrangement. He said he will actively cooperate with and support the dean on the discipline construction and faculty expansion efforts, continue servicing all the teachers and students, coordinating work between the university and the institute, and enhancing the level of research and teaching of the institute.
In her speech, Xuemin Xu affirmed the recent remarkable achievements and developments of the institute. She pointed out the important role the institute plays in promoting the internationalization of the university and hopes that JI can keep up the great work and build a better future under the leadership of the dean.
Background:
Peisen Huang received his B.S. degree in Precision Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1984, his M.E. and D.Eng. degrees in Precision Engineering & Mechatronics from Tohoku University, Japan in 1988 and 1995 respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1993. He started his academic career as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Stony Brook University in 1993 and was later promoted to Associate Professor and then Professor. He served as the Director of the Anorad/Rockwell Mechatronics Laboratory and Optical Metrology Laboratory and conducted research in optical sensing and measurement, machine vision, and mechatronics.
Dr. Huang joined the University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute in 2007 as a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and served successively as the Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Education, and Executive Dean. He became Dean of the Joint Institute in 2014 and has since been responsible for the daily management and strategic development of the institute. Dr. Huang was elected as a scholar of the National 1000-Talent Plan in 2009 and was appointed as an SJTU Chair Professor in 2010.
