On May 24, Innovation Center for China-U.S. Youth Exchange was officially inaugurated at the University of Michigna-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI). The center was unveiled by Sean Stein, the Consul General of the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai, and Weimin Che, the Deputy Director of Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange of China’s Ministry of Education, in a launching ceremony held at the newly-built Long Bin Building of the joint institute.
In his speech for the ceremony, Weimin Che said that young people are the pioneers and the vital force for innovation and development. The governments of China and U.S. attach great importance to the exchanges and cooperation among young people of the two countries in the fields of innovation and entrepreneurship. In order to encourage more young people in China to participate in activities of innovation and entrepreneurship, the Ministry of Education selected 18 Chinese universities, including SJTU, to set up the Innovation Center for China-U.S. Youth Exchange. The center serves to get universities, enterprises and communities involved, to carry out pragmatic cooperation in the aspects of maker-counselling, curriculum construction, and international exchange.
Sean Stein extended his congratulations for the new round of cooperation between SJTU and UM as well as the establishment of Innovation Center for China-U.S. Youth Exchange. He said that the cultivation of innovative international talents calls for international cooperation. The two top universities in China and U.S. should join hands to propel JI to a higher level. The center is expected to become a platform of progress and understanding for young makers of the two countries, who work together to provide solid and effective solutions for globalization.

In December 2017, SJTU was selected by the Ministry of Education as one of the first batch of higher education institutions to establish a Innovation Center for China-U.S. Youth Exchange. The center is set to cultivate innovative talents and promote the cultural exchange in the fields of innovation and entrepreneurship between China and the United States. During the meeting held in Beijing between the State leaders of the two countries in November 2017, both sides agreed to hold young maker competitions on annual basis and set up a number of innovation centers for youth exchange.
