The University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) students maintained their strong performance in the annual University Physics Competition (UPC). All the four JI teams attending the ninth UPC held in November 2018 were awarded medals, including a silver medal and three bronze medals, according to the official results announced by the organizer recently.

The University Physics Competition is an international contest for undergraduate students, who work in teams of three at their home colleges and universities all over the world, and spend a weekend in November, 48 hours, analyzing a real-world scenario using the principles of physics, and writing a formal paper describing their work. A total of 281 teams from top universities around the world attended the ninth UPC trying to solve the challenging problem of Sending a Light Sail Propelled Nanocraft to Alpha Centauri.

JI started to participate the annual competition in 2012. Over the past seven years, performance of JI students has been constantly outstanding. Weeks before the competition, JI students started their training culminating in a workshop where tips on how to approach contest-type problems and how to write a good solution paper were given, said Dr. Mateusz Krzyzosiak who organized the workshop as supervisor of JI teams.
