A team composed of three University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) undergraduate students has clinched the Best Student Paper award at the 2022 International Conference on Smart Transportation and Future Mobility (CSTFM 2022). Jiajun Gu, Qinhang Wu and Yicheng Hou won the award for their paper “Can yesterday’s mass transportation set the path for today’s sustainable transport? – A sustainability assessment of Shanghai No.71 Trolleybus”.
JI team members present the paper online during the conference.
JI team members carry out a survey at a Shanghai No.71 Trolleybus stop.
The paper of the JI team is based on an investigation of the Shanghai No.71 Trolleybus, the first bus line with dedicated lanes, dedicated stops, and dedicated signals by distributing questionnaires and conducting field surveys. The assessment on economic, environmental, and social aspects shows that compared to traditional bus lines, No. 71 Bus has a certain degree of improvement in safety, operational efficiency, and environmental protection. However, considering the construction and operation costs of the full-time restricted lanes, there is still room for improvement in the resource allocation. Suggestions are listed by the student team to deal with the deficiencies.
