The University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) has joined hands with Trip.com Group, a leading global travel service provider, to launch a scholarship exchange program to foster cross-cultural understanding and educational exchanges.
The joint program, Trip.com Group International Leadership Program, will provide funding to support students, covering tuition fees, international flights, accommodation, and culturally-immersive activities across Shanghai and other regions of China.
Whether it’s a trip to the Great Wall, or a Chinese cooking experience, students will explore the charms of the country as part of their study experience. In addition, they will receive a monthly stipend of 1,000 RMB to support their living expenses during the semester.
Recognizing the power of travel as a bridge across different countries, the program supports youths in gaining an international, well-rounded education and provides them with rich opportunities to build friendships across borders. Through cross-cultural interactions, these exchanges serve as building blocks, laying the groundwork for mutual understanding and cooperation between nations and the younger generation who are going to shape tomorrow’s world.
Speaking as the program host during the agreement signing ceremony, JI Dean Chien-Pin Chen said: “We are committed to building a world-class institute for nurturing future leaders with global visions. This scholarship program represents our dedication to equipping a new generation of leaders with the skills and experiences needed to thrive in an interconnected world.”
“When people travel further away, the world is brought closer. We believe in the transformative power of travel to connect people and cultures,” said Jane Sun, CEO of Trip.com Group. “Through this scholarship program, we aim to empower students to become global citizens and leaders who can bridge divides and promote mutual understanding.”
Jane Sun and Chien-Pin Chen sign an agreement to mark the launch of the scholarship.
The first batch of the semester exchange program will start from the 2024 Fall term at JI. Applications are open to students of all nationalities coming from selected universities who demonstrate strong academic performance, with a GPA above 3.6/4.0. Candidates will be asked to submit an additional application letter, along with a personal photo, CV, and recommendation letter from a faculty member, industry leader, mentor, or supervisor.
Currently, applications are open, with a deadline for submission on May 1, 2024. The selected students will be announced following a comprehensive review process.
