Three undergraduate students of the University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) have been awarded SJTU Fan Xuqi Scholarship for 2024. According to the recent announcement of the SJTU Student Service Center, JI sophomore students including Ruikai Yang, Zihao He and Yiwei Xia were among the recipients of the scholarship.
The Fan Xuqi Scholarship was established in 2013 in honor of the centenary birthday of the late SJTU President Fan Xuqi. It was initiated and funded by a collective of alumni who had received World Bank loans for studying abroad in the early 1980s. The scholarship operates under a mentorship system, where distinguished alumni from various industries mentor the award-winning students individually, providing them with guidance and support.
Ruikai Yang majoring in Mechanical Engineering was enrolled at JI in 2022. He has received numerous honors, including the National Scholarship for Undergraduates, the John Wu and Jane Sun Excellence Scholarship, the Excellent Scholarship (Class A) from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Yang has also achieved notable distinctions such as the Mathematical Contest in Modeling/ Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM) awards including Honorable Mention in 2023 and Outstanding Winner in 2024, and a bronze medal in the International Physics Olympiad in 2023. He has been actively involved in social activities such as voluntary teaching and serves as the Director of the Business Department of the JI Student Union.
Yiwei Xia majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering was enrolled at JI in 2022. She has received numerous scholarships including the Future Technology Taihu Scholarship, Yu Liming Scholarship and Feng Tongsheng Scholarship, as well as the MCM/ICM Honorable Mention award, the Second Prize in the National Mathematical Modeling Competition, and a Silver Award in the International Physics Competition (UPC) for college students. Currently, She serves as a teaching assistant for Advanced Mathematics and is a member of the JI Badminton Team.
Zihao He majoring in Electrical and Computer Engineering was enrolled at JI in 2022. He serves as the Vice Chairman of the JI Science Association and a member of the JI Badminton Team. He has received honors including the National Scholarship for Undergraduates for the 2022-2023 academic year, the John Wu and Jane Sun Excellence Scholarship, and a Silver Award in the International Physics Competition (UPC) for college students.
