At just 17 years old, Yusif Mammadov from Baku, Azerbaijan, has already accomplished an impressive array of achievements. Fluent in five languages and proficient in six programming languages, he has also established a green technology startup. Fresh out of high school, Yusif has embarked on an exciting journey, leaving his hometown, often called the “Paris of the Caucasus”, to study in Shanghai, the “Paris of the East,” as a freshman at the University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter).

A star student from Baku

Born into an ordinary family in Baku, Yusif has long demonstrated a commitment to both academic achievement and personal growth. Before graduating high school, he earned top marks in Azerbaijan’s national unified exam, achieving a perfect score of 100 in mathematics and an overall score of 285 out of 300, placing him in the top 1% of all examinees. At just 17, Yusif has already mastered multiple programming languages, including MATLAB, C++, Java, JavaScript, and Python, and is fluent in Azerbaijani, Russian, Turkish, English, and Tsakhurian. He has also passed the HSK Level 2 exam in Chinese.

Beyond his academic achievements, Yusif is the founder and CEO of GreenExchange, a startup focused on reducing resource waste through the reuse and exchange of books. He has also served as Director of Operations for Ushaqlarimiza Oyredek, Azerbaijan’s first youth-led NGO, where he collaborated with international organizations like the United Nations to support underprivileged children.

When reflecting on himself, Yusif says, “It’s always difficult to describe myself, but I would say I am optimistic, friendly, responsible, and creative. I am passionate about exploring and discovering new things across various fields—whether science, nature, history, or culture. I enjoy participating in different activities, regardless of the outcome, because I believe in the value of trying.”

Choosing the Joint Institute

Yusif’s decision to study at JI stems from his desire to receive a world-class education in a globalized environment. After researching universities around the world, he chose China and specifically Shanghai Jiao Tong University. “As an engineering student, I wanted more than just a degree; I sought deep knowledge. The Joint Institute stood out for its blend of Chinese and Western educational strengths — it offers abundant resources, academic excellence, and a more open management style where student voices are heard.”

The dynamic atmosphere of Shanghai and China’s leadership in technological innovation were also key factors in his decision. “China is at the forefront of technological progress. Studying here gives me the opportunity to learn from top talents while immersing myself in a culture that values both progress and resilience,” he adds.

Finding belonging in a new world

Yusif arrived in Shanghai in September 2024, marking his first visit to China. He describes the people as warm and helpful, noting that the culture is rich in responsibility and enthusiasm. “In just a few decades, China has undergone extraordinary transformations, driven by a solid cultural foundation and an unwavering pursuit of progress.”

Upon entering the campus, Yusif was amazed by its size. “I wouldn’t call the Minhang campus just a campus; it’s essentially a city. I’m certain I won’t be able to explore it fully in four years, but I will strive to learn as much as possible.” He finds a sense of belonging in the Long Bin Building of the Joint Institute, feeling that the facilities exceed his expectations. “Our building has everything we need. It truly feels like home!”

A JI life full of vitality

Yusif’s freshman year is filled with challenges and rewards. Adjusting to a new culture and learning environment is not easy, but he quickly integrates into the vibrant community. “Although I’ve only been here for a few months, I’ve noticed how helpful and humble the people are. Their hospitality is a significant part of the culture.”

He finds each course and professor unique and engaging. “It’s hard to choose a favorite course or professor because they are all excellent. My academic writing class with Professor Ryan Thorpe features his signature engaging lecturing style. The calculus class with Professor Alvaro Mateos Gonzalez was challenging at first, but his enthusiasm and willingness to help have made it much better. My favorite class, despite my struggles, is with Professor Jigang Wu; his dedication and positive attitude are simply amazing.”

In his free time, Yusif explores the campus and the city. An avid hiker, he dreams of visiting other Chinese cities, with Harbin at the top of his list. He is also active in extracurricular activities, recently joining the international student association to plan a cultural exchange event titled “Shanghai Exploration.”

Yusif’s journey at JI is just beginning. He looks forward to continuous growth and aims to make a significant impact in the future. “I hope to leverage my passion for renewable energy and innovation to collaboratively address evolving challenges and provide impactful solutions in the field of green technology.”
