The University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI) Professor Ma Chengbin has been elevated to an IEEE Fellow Class of 2025, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). This recognition highlights Professor Ma’s outstanding contributions to high-frequency wireless power transfer and hybrid energy storage systems.
IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization, recognizes only a small fraction of its members for the Fellow grade each year. Less than 0.1% of the organization’s membership is selected, based on their substantial contributions to engineering and technology. This year, Professor Ma is one of three faculty members from Shanghai Jiao Tong University to earn this distinction.
Professor Ma is a full professor of the UM-SJTU Joint Institute, where he specializes in energy storage systems, battery management, wireless power transfer, and their wide-ranging applications in electronic devices, electric vehicles, microgrids, and smart grids. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tokyo and is a dual-appointment professor at the Department of Automation, School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
In addition to his research, Professor Ma holds several leadership roles, such as Vice Chair of Wireless Power Transfer Technical Committee of China Electrotechnical Society and Chair of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society’s Shanghai Chapter. He is serving as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Industrial Electronics and has been involved in organizing major international conferences, including the 2023 IEEE Industrial Electronics Society’s Sustainable Energy Systems Conference and the 2022 International Conference on Wireless Power Transfer.
In recognition of his academic excellence, Professor Ma has received numerous accolades, including the 7th “Koguan Top Ten Best Teacher” Award from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the 2019 AirFuel Alliance Research Excellence Award, and the First Prize of 2024 Science and Technology Progress Award from China Power Supply Society. His work has also earned him a place on the global list of the top 2% scientists for 2020–2024 in “Career Long” and “Single Recent Year”.
Professor Ma’s contributions extend beyond his research; he has mentored many graduate students, several of whom have gone on to prestigious academic careers. His research group has garnered accolades such as the 4th “Koguan Top Ten Best Research Group Award” from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
