The University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) faculty member Xinfei Guo and 2010 alumnus Yangbing Lou have been named to the 2024 Forbes China Outstanding Overseas Returnees list, recently unveiled by Forbes. This recognition continues the institute’s proud tradition of being featured in various Forbes rankings over the years.
Launched in 2022, the annual Forbes China Outstanding Overseas Returnees list honors exceptional individuals who have studied abroad and returned to China to contribute to the country’s growth and development. The theme for this year, “Resilience and Breakthrough,” highlights the outstanding achievements of these returnees, who are driving China’s advanced productivity and playing a key role in the country’s social and economic progress.
Personal Profile
Xinfei Guo
Xinfei Guo is an associate professor of the UM-SJTU Joint Institute, who also serves as a doctoral supervisor and IEEE Senior Member. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of Virginia and a Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Florida. Before joining JI, Guo worked at industry giants NVIDIA and IBM, where he was a key contributor to the development of the second and third-generation BlueField series Data Processing Units (DPUs), among other innovative chip products. Guo has authored over 40 research papers in top-tier journals and conferences, as well as a book on integrated circuit design. He has received multiple awards, including five Best Paper and Special Awards. Currently, Guo serves as the Associate Editor-in-Chief for TVLSI, an editorial board member of Integration, the VLSI Journal, and a program committee member for over 10 leading conferences. He is also an executive member of the CCF Open Source Development Committee and Fault Tolerance Special Committee. His primary research interests include low-power, high-reliability digital circuits and systems, machine learning-assisted EDA techniques, and reconfigurable computing.
Yangbing Lou
Yangbing Lou, who serves as Chief Data Scientist/Co-President of Hangzhou Amwise Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., is a graduate of the first JI undergraduate class enrolled in 2006. He holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from SJTU and Mechanical Engineering from UM. He also holds dual master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering, as well as a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from UM. Lou is a member of Zhejiang Province’s Leading Innovation and Entrepreneurship Team, an expert on the Zhejiang Province Smart Manufacturing Committee, and a recipient of the Shanghai Pujiang Talent Program under the Magnolia Talent Plan.
