2022 in Review: outstanding JI students in the limelight
The University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) students maintained their unparalleled performance in the year of 2022, as many received wide attention because of their outstanding achievements in various fields including academic study, innovation and entrepreneurship, public welfare, cultural and sports activities. The following are examples of such outstanding students who helped building up reputation of JI as one of the best international engineering institute in China and the world.
JI students complete study away program in Singapore
Nineteen international students from the University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) have completed their one-semester Study Away program in Singapore. The program jointly operated by JI and the SJTU Asia Pacific Graduate Institute (SJTU-APGI) in collaboration with Singapore-based Nanyang Technological University (NTU) was started on August 4 and ended on December 18.
JI student Nuocheng Ji named 2022 SJTU Person of the Year
The University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) undergraduate student Nuocheng Ji has been named SJTU’s 2022 Person (Student) of the Year.
JI Professor proposes inverse design of 3D reconfigurable curvilinear modular origami structures
The University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) Associate Professor Jaehyung Ju and his collaborator have published a research article titled “Inverse design of 3D reconfigurable curvilinear modular origami structures using geometric and topological reconstructions” in Nature Communications, a top-tier multidisciplinary journal of natural sciences.
Pakistanis’ JI life forges strong sense of belonging
Editor’s Note: Zeeshan Qaiser from Pakistan received a master’s degree and a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI,JI hereafter) at SJTU in 2016 and 2020, respectively. After graduation, he pursued post-doctoral research at JI under his doctoral advisor Shane Johnson.
JI international students celebrate Thanksgiving with a big party on campus
Games and gifts were provided. Free lunch was served. International students of the University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) celebrated the upcoming Thanksgiving Day with faculty and staff members in a party said to be the largest of its kind over the past few years. The event was held in the Faculty & Staff Club of Long Bin Building on November 21.
